Dr. Zhu has extensive experience in intellectual property litigation that involves transnational disputes. He has represented numerous clients in patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret cases in the US and China. He has prepared and prosecuted hundreds of patent applications. The patent applications involve a variety of technologies including semiconductor manufacturing, electronic devices, telecommunications, computer systems and software, renewable energy, automotive systems and medical devices.

Dr. Zhu has prepared numerous opinion letters on infringement, validity and patentability. He has represented clients on patent aspects of mergers and acquisitions, and has conducted dozens of due diligence reviews. Dr. Zhu is a frequent speaker on intellectual property protection in the United States and China, and has lectured at Stanford University and the University of California at Berkeley.

Prior to joining RuyakCherian, Dr. Zhu was a partner in the San Francisco office of a major international law firm. Previously, Dr. Zhu was a senior engineer at General Motors, where he conducted research on electronic systems, engines and powertrains, and coordinated research projects involving engineers from different divisions of the company.

Representative Trials:

Represented a US company in a patent infringement and trade secret action in China against Chinese defendants. The US company’s recovery I the largest ever by a foreign company in China. All China Lawyers Association named the case one of the “Top Ten IP Cases of 2012.” The case was also selected by the Chinese Supreme Court as a model case.

Represented a Chinese company in US litigation involving defamation, unfair competition, copyright infringement and trademark infringement.

Represented a US company in a patent licensing dispute against Chinese and Taiwanese companies before Shenzhen Intermediate Court.

Represented a Canadian company against a US company in a patent infringement case before Jiangsu High Court.

Represented a Chinese company in a non-infringement action in China against a US company that accused the Chinese company of patent infringement. China’s Anhui Provence named the case of its top intellectual property cases in 2012.

Represented a Chinese company against a US company in US litigation involving a patent licensing dispute.

Represented a US client in a patent enforcement action against several Germany and China based companies at a trade show in Germany; representing the same US client in infringement lawsuits filed in Germany following the enforcement action at the trade show
